They say experience is the best teacher but I don’t think that is true at all because there are experiences you better not have because you may not be alive to learn the lessons thereon or tell the story and when it’s being told by others it’s usually a tragic story. Experience may be a teacher but in most cases, it’s never a compassionate teacher. Experience teaches the hard way and with a lot of cruelty, and it is time-consuming to learn from experience. It is much faster to learn by instruction.

A Quick Tale By My Mother

From my childhood, my mother has always told me and my siblings a tale about Nwako whenever she wants to expressly impress on us the understanding of the importance of being clever and proactive in life. Nwako was the least in the family of seven house geckos. One day these seven geckos starting from the eldest were asked one after the other how many times something will happen to them before they learn from it, the first said that something will happen to him just once and that he will learn from it. Obviously, he didn’t disappoint as the eldest after all it sounds intelligent and reasonable to learn from the first experience. The next said five times, the next one said three times and they went on like that until it got to Nwako.

When Nwako was asked how many times something will happen to him before he learned from it he said he will not wait for something to happen to him before he learn rather he will learn from what happened to others. It is written,

Wise people see trouble coming and get out of its way, but fools go straight to the trouble and suffer for it.

My mother would conclude by saying that no sensible person uses his/her hand to check if fire can burn or use his/her two legs to ascertain the depth of a stream, only a fool does that.

Nwako will rather learn from the experiences (successes and failures, mistakes or misfortunes) of others than wait foolishly for the same ill-fate that he could have avoided if he had learned from their experiences to befall him. It is foolishness to want to learn by experience in this age and time when you can learn from others because nothing is really new according to the Teacher, King Solomon

History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.

There is really nothing you want to do now or that you are going through that hasn’t happened before. So instead of reinventing the wheel why not learn from the mistakes and successes of those who have done or gone through it before?
